Steuben County REMC is committed to working with our members while maintaining fair and consistent billing practices. The following policy outlines important information regarding electric service disconnection timelines, seasonal protections, reconnection charges, and deposit requirements.

Service is subject to disconnection two (2) months and two (2) weeks after the bill’s original due date if payment has not been received.

A disconnect notification will be issued to the member two (2) weeks prior to the scheduled disconnect date.

Disconnection Restrictions

Steuben County REMC under normal circumstances will disconnect service under the following:

  • The day before or the day of a recognized holiday
  • Weekends (Saturday or Sunday)

LIHEAP (Energy Assistance Program) Seasonal Moratorium

Steuben County REMC recognizes the following moratorium period for qualified members.

During this period, qualified members are protected from service disconnection in accordance with applicable guidelines:

  • Winter Moratorium: December 1 – March 15
  • Summer forecasted heat index warning (effective June 1, 2026):
    • On any day when the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a forecast indicating the heat index at the customer’s service address will reach or exceed 95°F within the next 48 hours.

If service has been disconnected, the member must pay:

  • A $50.00 reconnection charge during the hours of 7:30 am – 4:00pm
  • After 4:00pm reconnection charge is $200.00 and
  • The full past due balance on the account

 

Security Deposit

If there is no existing deposit on the account, the member will also be required to pay:

  • A $200.00 security deposit,
    in addition to the reconnection charge and past due balance.
  • Security deposits are refunded after 12 months without the generation of a disconnection notice.
  • Refunded deposits are listed on your 13th month bill.
