STEUBEN COUNTY REMC

OPERATION ROUND UP PROGRAM

Steuben County REMC launched the Operation Round Up® program in June of 2004, with member participation beginning in August 2004.  We were pleased to offer this innovative community service fund-raising program as a uniquely simple and rewarding way for our electric cooperative members to help fund worthwhile projects in our own communities.  Operation Round Up is just what its name implies.  Each month, the REMC simply “rounds up” the electric bill of participating members to the next highest dollar.  For example, a member’s monthly bill of $52.72 would be automatically rounded up to $53.00, with the additional 28 cents going to the Operation Round Up fund for distribution to worthwhile causes.  The average estimated annual giving is approximately 50 cents a month, or $6.00 per year.  Small change to the individual, perhaps, but with over 75% of our members now participating, the thousands of dollars the program generates can mean a big difference throughout our service territory, which includes Steuben County and parts of DeKalb and LaGrange Counties.  To date, $125,077 has been awarded in grants to charitable organizations and civic groups within our community.

A separate volunteer board of directors, made up of three REMC members (Amy Beer, Dale Smith and James Stock), and two REMC employees (Richard Gens and Alan Hile), administer the fund and set the guidelines for the distribution of the contributions.  Operation Round Up is all about community spirit, service and goodwill.  It is an exciting extension of Steuben County REMC’s pledge of commitment to our community.

The Operation Round Up Board meets quarterly to review the grant requests received in each quarter.  Applications are available at both the Steuben County REMC office at 1212 S Wayne St. and at the Steuben County Community Foundation at 207 S Wayne St.  For further information concerning the Operation Round Up program or the application process, contact the REMC office.
